Spatial Women (SpatialW) aims to actively network with female researchers in computer science and spatial science, work with conference organizers to hold networking and educational events at various conferences, and offer career development mentoring and invited talks from senior researchers in related field in academia and industry.
SpatialW works with conference organizers to hold networking and educational events at various conferences, and maintains SpatialW mailing list to share valuable announcements.
SpatialW connects with female senior researchers in academia and industry to offer career development mentoring.
We co-organized the DEI event at ACM SIGSPATIAL '24 with the DEI conference co-chairs, involving 44 participants, including students, 3 organizers, 10 mentors assigned in advance, and researchers from academia, industry, and national labs. We hosted a lunchtime event on Day 1, where mentors shared their experiences with junior researchers and answered their questions.
We organized the second networking event at the ACM SIGSPATIAL '23 with 17 participants and three invited mentors, Prof. Li Xiong, Dr. Lexie Yang, and Prof. Christine Bassem. We learned valuable networking strategies and heard about mentors' career development experiences and their Ph.D. lives.
We organized a unique networking event aimed at promoting diversity in computer science. Dr. Diane Oyen from Los Alamos National Laboratory gave an invited talk and shared her insights on career development. We had the opportunity to connect with researchers from diverse backgrounds and build meaningful professional relationships while supporting diversity in the field.
We gave a talk entitled "A Roadmap to Becoming a Computer Scientist" to an audience of 30 individuals at the Computer Club.
We had the first networking event for female graduate students at ACM SIGSPATIAL '22, gathering at the public lounge at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront hotel. We shared our experiences as female researchers from various computer science and geospatial communities.
